QUARTERLY JOURNAL FOR THE BEST NEW GENRE FICTION FROM ETHNIC MINORITY WRITERS

Introduction

Seven Earths is a free distribution quarterly eJournal of Fantasy, SF and Horror short fiction for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) writing. Our aim is to provide new and emerging writers of BME backgrounds with a platform to showcase their work and launch their writing careers. Seven Earths was founded in November 2009 by three Lancashire writers; Noor Jahangir, Zakarya Anwar and Omar Anwar.

Our Aims

-       Produce a free Quarterly eJournal featuring short stories and poetry, mostly by BME writers, and original artwork

-       Produce a printed annual anthology featuring the best of fiction published in the journal

-       Run a competition every quarter for Under 18 writers, with a commitment to publish the best three entrees, in each issue.

-       Promote the craft of writing in Sixth Form Schools and Colleges

Why Seven Earths?

The term itself evokes powerful images of other worlds, alternate realities and mysticism. The term comes from a Quranic reference 'It was God who created seven heavens and seven earths . . .' that has been taken by scientists as referring to either seven continents on earth or to the seven layers of earth, i.e crust, mantle, core, etc, and the seven heavens as the seven layers of atmosphere around Earth. We believe the title will inspire the right mindset and the kind of fiction we are looking for.

Writers

Careful attention should be given to minimizing the occurrence of spelling, syntax and grammatical errors. Short stories must have a minimum word limit of 1000 words and a maximum of 5000 words. Poetry should be no more than 50 lines in length. All submissions must be of the fantasy, sf or horror genre. We are looking for good writing in every sense of the word, i.e. plot, characterization, world-building, structure and style.

First off, the work must be your own and previously unpublished. Each author/artist will retain copyright of their work. All submissions should be in either Arial or Times New Roman, font size 12, at least 1.5 line-spaced and with decent margins. Basically, in Standard Manuscript Format (http://www.shunn.net/format/story.html).

Submissions must be sent as an attachment to an email and the email itself should explain why your story/poem deserves to be published, as well as a short bio about you. Please send your submissions to submissions@trollking.co.uk

All submissions will be responded to as soon as possible. The editors are working on a voluntary basis and therefore it could take as long as four to eight weeks before we respond. As we are a not-for-profit, free distribution outfit, we are unable to pay for any submissions.

We would like the journal to have as wide a readership as possible. So we will not accept submissions that feature explicit sexual acts, gratuitous violence and/or vulgar language. Seven Earths is a fantasy, science fiction and horror journal. We are looking for the very best stories grounded in these genres.

Artists

If you would like your work featured as cover art for the journal, it should be sent as a jpeg or tif format, 300 dpi, 210mm x 297mm. Artwork must not feature nudity, acts of a sexual nature or gore. Copyright remains with you. Again, because of the nature of the journal, we will be unable to pay for your work.
