Work has started on this rewrite of something I wrote in my teen years. Initially, it was meant to be a padding out of the original with some more character work and plot. However, as these things go, it’s kind of become a full rewrite.
The original was good for a teen project. I was desperate to see my name on the cover of a book, and I was kind of enamoured with Disney’s Aladdin. It was preachy, too. So, the plan was to follow the plot of the original and rewrite chapter by chapter. Yeah, that lasted for about two chapters.
The problem started when I went back and reread the Arabian Nights version and looked into its history. There is so much more story than Disney gave us. So, I decided to re-plot the whole thing and blend in more elements from the Arabian Nights version. However, in the process of plotting, the story has taken on a life of its own. Basically, I took Theseus’s ship, blew it up, and am now building one bigger and better.
Alauddin is going to be the first in a series. The plan is to write three stories, Ali Baba and Sinbad, being the other two. I’ve commissioned my artist daughter to do the cover art for all three. So, before you all start getting excited and everything, it may be a few months yet before they are done. Watch this space.
