The Washington Post recently published this article on an English science fiction novel from the early days of science fiction emerging as a genre. The article poses the question, was this the first cyborg? Some may say that the Hebrew golums were the first, however, they are powered by black magic and therefore fall into the realms of the uncanny. Perhaps Frankenstiens Monster? The monster is a product of science and bought to life through large quantities of electricity. However, the monster is biological other than the two bolts inserted into his neck. What about the Colossus of Rhodes or Talos? I think they too were driven by the intercession of supernatural powers, so not really cybernetic.
