Creativity is good but it can be massively distracting. I’ve got a lot going on between work and study. The last thing I need right now is for a full on story to consume my every waking moment. But at the same time I don’t want it to completely dry up either.
Normally, what I do whenever I get hit by a lightning bolt of an idea is write down the concept on my phone or on paper; banking it for the future when I have the time and the will. But that doesn’t happen regularly enough now for it to be my only output. Luckily, during the lockdown I discovered Hit Record. It’s an app by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (10 Things I Hate About You, Dark Knight Rises, Looper) that aims to bring different creative types together to collaborate on various projects. The projects are quite often bite sized so it’s easy to dip in for a few minutes and put out a mini story or upload a picture you’ve taken or do a bit of voice over. It’s already built up a sizable community of writers, artists, photographers, actors and musicians. You choose what you want to work on and when you want to contribute.
Here’s an example of a challenge that I took part in. Write a sad story in one sentence. Feel free to try it out post your sentence in the comments section below.
